Randy Samaroo

Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago
School of Engineering, Mathematics and Science

"One of the biggest things I learned at RMU was how to work in groups," says Randy Samaroo, an RMU engineering major who helped redesign a critical piece of equipment for a manufacturing company as part of a class project. "When you work on a project like this, you see the best and worst of everyone's character. Some people really come through in crunch time."

To complete the project, Randy and his team redesigned a powered shelf ladder to comply with a range of criteria, including OSHA safety standards. The demanding guidelines put Randy's skills to the test and gave him a taste of the working world. It also taught Randy a few things about himself.

"I learned that I like details, and I'm good at details and follow-through," says Randy. "That's my strength."

He also learned the benefits of working hard. "Nothing comes without discipline and hard work. Without them, success just doesn't feel as good."

Working in a group taught me about different working styles and approaches.
