First Year Student Mentors 

First-Year Seminar Program Mentors are chosen based on their enthusiasm, attitude, past leadership accomplishments, ethical conduct and their ability to be a role model. The process begins in March each year when the mentor applications are made available in the Center for Student Success to interested students. Applications are returned with two references from faculty and/or staff members who are able to provide a reference based on the criteria above. The student must interview with the Center for Student Success staff. Each applicant is ranked based on a 5-point scale. 

First-Year Mentor Responsibilities:

  • Orientation Weekend responsibilities
  • Attend all scheduled weekend activities
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm about Robert Morris University as a place of study
  • Memorize the names of students in your group and use them as often as possible
  • Communicate a sincere, personal interest in the students by interacting with them in a positive manner
  • Be alert to signs of boredom, homesickness, etc. and discuss appropriate responses with a professional staff member

First-Year Seminar Responsibilities:

  • Attend weekly group mentor meetings
  • Attend weekly meetings with your assigned instructor
  • Attend all scheduled seminar sessions
  • Work in harmony with the instructor in conducting class discussions and activities
  • Model the behavior of an academically focused student by using good study habits, practicing good time-management, and by active involvement in campus life
  • Continue to observe students for signs of poor adjustment and actively communicate interest in each student's academic progress and social interaction
  • Complete an evaluation following the conclusion of the Seminar
  • Be a positive role model for your students at all times
  • Complete weekly mentor logs

Out of Class Involvement:

  • Arrange for at least two meetings with each student in your seminar section
  • Attend the First-Year Experience Day of Service
  • Organize and attend four all-freshmen social activities 
  • E-mail class weekly and carbon copy your instructor and the Assistant Director
